What does a paediatric occupational therapist actually do?

A paediatric occupational therapist focuses on function — the things your child and family need or want to be able to manage in everyday life.For a child, that might mean getting dressed, eating, toileting, playing, joining family routines, getting through the kindergarten or school day, becoming more independent or participating safely in the community.We don't just ask, "Can they do it?" We look at what the activity requires, what your child can currently manage, what is getting in the way and what could make it easier.Sometimes we need to build a skill. Sometimes changing the task or environment makes more sense. Often we do a bit of both.Paediatric OT is about much more than handwriting. It is about helping everyday life work.

Educational support at Why Wait brings an early childhood education and learning lens to development.Our registered early childhood teachers are interested in how children engage in deep learning — how they explore, play, investigate, solve problems, communicate ideas, make connections, develop concepts and build on what they already know.For young children, this doesn't usually look like sitting at a desk being taught. Learning happens through play, relationships, movement, conversation, experimentation and meaningful experiences.An activity may look simple or playful from the outside. The important part is what the child is learning through it and how the educator is noticing, responding and extending that learning.

Is educational support the same as tutoring?

No. Tutoring usually focuses on teaching or practising particular academic content or skills.Educational support in early intervention is much broader. We are interested in how the child learns, not simply whether they can complete a particular piece of schoolwork.That might include curiosity, problem solving, persistence, play, communication, developing concepts, flexible thinking and learning from experiences.As children get older, academic learning may form part of their goals, but our educational support is not about pushing young children into formal learning earlier.

What's the difference between OT and educational support?

Sometimes, not very much when you watch the session!An occupational therapist and an early childhood teacher may both be on the floor playing, building something, moving around the room, modelling an idea or helping a child solve a problem. Both use relationships, play and meaningful activities, and both consider development and participation.The difference is often the professional lens behind the activity.Our OTs have a particular focus on function: what does this child and family need to manage in everyday life, what is getting in the way and what could help?Our early childhood teachers bring a learning lens: how is this child engaging, exploring, understanding, making connections and building deeper learning?Children don't separate learning and function into neat boxes, so neither do we. There is a lot of overlap, and we use that overlap to our advantage.

How do I know who my child should see?

You don't need to know before you contact us.Tell us what is happening, what is difficult and what you would like to be different. We can help work out who in our team has the skills that best fit what your child needs.Sometimes that's an occupational therapist. Sometimes it's educational support. Sometimes it's both.And sometimes we start with one and later recommend moving to another as we learn more about your child or their needs change.You don't need to work out which service your child fits into before asking us for help.

Can my child have both OT and educational support?

Yes, if both are useful.Children don't develop in separate boxes labelled "function" and "learning". The two constantly interact, so there are times when an occupational therapist and an early childhood teacher can each bring something valuable.That doesn't necessarily mean your child needs two appointments every week.One person might take the lead while another contributes when needed. They may work together for a period, or your child may move between supports as their priorities change.We aren't trying to give children as many services as possible. We are trying to work out what support is useful now.

Why might you recommend changing team members?

Because what your child needs can change.Sometimes the work we've already done helps us understand the difficulty more clearly. Sometimes a new priority emerges. And sometimes another member of our team simply has more experience or skill in the area your child needs help with next.When that happens, we'll tell you.A recommendation to change doesn't mean the previous support has failed. It means we think somebody else may now be better placed to help.Sometimes we recommend a complete change. Sometimes two team members work together for a while.We would rather change the support than keep doing the same thing simply because that's where your child started.Right person. Right skills. Right time.

What does an OT assessment actually tell us?

An assessment helps us understand more about your child's strengths, difficulties and everyday function.Sometimes this includes standardised assessments. Sometimes observation, talking with your family, information from school or kindergarten and seeing how your child manages real activities can tell us just as much.The purpose isn't simply to produce a score.We want to understand what the information means for your child's everyday life: what is working, what is difficult, why it might be difficult and what, if anything, would be useful to do next.
